SPACE CITY REVUE: An Evening of Music and Comedy (Press Release)

An Evening of Music and Comedy at Big Star Bar

Houston, TX, April 29, 2013– Local rock bands, Strange Weapons and Hoofprints, along with two of Houston’s best comics, Ty Mahany and Dusti Rhodes, have come together to bring you an evening of rock ‘n roll and laughs.  Come and help folks live out their dreams of being in That Thing You Do and on The Ed Sullivan Show.  If you don’t know what these are, then you are probably either:

  1. Not old enough to get in; sorry it’s 21 and Up.
  2. Have seen the Outkast, “Hey Ya”, video and thought it was a brilliant, new, concept video.
  3. Normal; it is we who are the weirdos…  We apologize for nothing…
  4. In denial of how awesome fun is, aka lame.

“Basically, we are putting on an old-school variety show, like The Ed Sullivan Show”, says Strange Weapons’ Joel Hoyle.  He adds, “We have friends who are musicians, comedians, deejays, etc.  Why not get together, have some fun, and see what happens?  Hopefully; people will dig it.  No pretensions, no bullshit, just good fun.”

Indie-rock band, Hoofprints, will kick the May 18th show off, with the comedians sandwiched in between the bands.  Ty Mahany will also serve as Master of Ceremony, which, on its own, promises to be worth the price of admission (free).

UPDATE: Recording

I just wanted to give a quick update on what we’re doing.

This past Friday, we started recording two songs that will, hopefully, be released soon. We’re still trying to figure out the best way to release them (vinyl, hologram, vhs, etc.).

Nick and Ben

Pushing the buttons for us is Ben Murphy from the band Brand New Hearts.

The two songs are called “Four Steps” and “It Could Happen to You”. These are two songs that we recorded before, two weeks after we started playing together, and are on this site.

We chose to record these two again because we want to make up for the first recording of these songs. They are good songs and our first recording did them no justice. We play them so much better now, that it’s ridiculous. So, we’re doing them again!

We’ll have more news as it happens; maybe even a little taster soon.

Until then, keep on rockin’ in the free world.

- Joel
